The fourth version of the National Conference on RECENT ADVANCES IN TRAFFIC ENGINEERING (RATE 22) will be held at SVNIT, Surat. The conference aims to bring together professional engineers, academicians, researchers and others with interest in the field of Traffic and Transportation and provide a forum to exchange their experiences. Post Graduate Section in Transportation Engineering & Planning, Department of Civil Engineering (DoCE), SVNIT extend a hearty invitation to all to attend the conference.

About Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology

The institute was initially established as REC in 1961 and was upgraded as a NIT with the status of ‘Deemed University’ in, 2002. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) is one of the pioneering engineering institutions of the country, the Institute of National Importance, which has contributed many outstanding engineers in India and abroad. It is conducting six UG programs, twenty PG programs, and Ph.D. programs in all disciplines of engineering and applied sciences as well as five-year Integrated M. Sc. Program in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Special attention is also given to interdisciplinary research.

About the Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the pioneering departments of the Institute established in 1961. Department offers Post-graduate and Doctoral Programs in the following areas in addition to the undergraduate programme:

  3. Water Recourses Engineering

  4. Urban Planning

  5. Geotechnical Engineering

  6. Structural Engineering

  7. Construction Technology and Management

Department has a Centre of Excellence in Water Resources and Flood Management. Department offers consultancy services in all the areas of civil engineering. Currently, 60 doctoral students have successfully completed their research at the department.

About the Transportaion Engineering and Planning Section

Transportation Engineering and Planning Section (TEP) section of SVNIT was established in the year 2007. The yearly intake of Master’s programme in DoCE in Transportation Engineering and Planning Section is 27. Since its inception, more than 120 students have completed their master’s programme and 22 students have completed their doctoral studies in Transportation Engineering and Planning. The alumni of the section are well placed in leading consultancy firms and academic institutions, while some of the alumni have joined the doctoral program in reputed institutions in India and abroad. The section has strong academic ties with CSIR-CRRI, New Delhi; IITs; NITs; The Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Germany; University of North Carolina- Charlotte; Queensland University of Technology; University of Missouri, etc. SVNIT Surat was one of the seven premier institutions involved with CSIR - CRRI in the successful completion of the Inter-Agency Project (IAP) titled, “Indian Highway Capacity Manual” (referred to as ‘Indo-HCM’) sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.

The researchers of the section publish more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences yearly. Presently, the section has ongoing research projects awarded from prestigious agencies like DST, DST-DAAD, CSIR-CRRI, NRIDA - New Delhi, and MOUHA with grants of more than 2 crores. The faculty members of the section are also actively involved in consultancy works for the government and semi-government organisations in the areas of pavement design, intersection improvement, road safety, and transport planning. The section has recently conducted eight training programmes on Road Safety Engineering Measures in association with Asian Infrastructures Investment Bank (AIIB), Asian Institute of Transport Development (AITD), and MORTH. One such workshop on Road Safety: Engineering, Enforcement & Education with Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GUJROSA), Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The section has successfully hosted three editions of national conference on Recent Advances in Traffic Engineering (RATE) and GIAN program on Road Safety. TEP, SVNIT was also co-organizer of the 4th conference of Transportation Research Group (CTRG) of India in association with IIT-Bombay and going to host the 7th CTRG in 2023 in Surat.
